Practical steps for planning, packing and moving day.

Four weeks before your move

  • Confirm the likely date and prepare your inventory.
  • Ask companies for written quotes using the same move details.
  • Check access, parking, lift bookings and any building rules.
  • Separate items to keep, donate, sell or dispose of responsibly.
  • Plan address changes and contact your utility suppliers.

Pack smarter

  • Use small boxes for heavy items and larger ones for lighter belongings.
  • Label every box with its destination room and a short contents note.
  • Protect fragile items individually and tell the company about them.
  • Keep fixings in labelled bags with the corresponding furniture.
  • Ask the company how appliances, tools and garden equipment should be prepared.
  • Keep documents, valuables, medication and essential chargers with you.

On moving day

  • Keep routes clear and protect access from children and pets.
  • Show the crew what is moving and point out fragile or unusual items.
  • Keep keys, refreshments and an essentials bag accessible.
  • Check each room, cupboard, garage and loft before leaving.
  • Confirm any issues with the moving company and keep your written records.

Volume and distance estimates

The planner estimates cubic metres from selected items and suggests a rough vehicle category. It cannot check payload, actual furniture dimensions or access. Its postcode distance tool gives straight-line miles, not road mileage. Ask your company to confirm the final vehicle and route.
